Situé dans le quartier de Mushayrib, le Souq Waqif est l'un des centres névralgiques de Doha. Datant des années 1950, il a totalement été rénové à l'image des bâtiments d'origine avec des techniques et des matériaux traditionnels. Le bois et le bambou ont été importés d'Asie. Durant les heures chaudes, on y croise peu de monde mais une fois la nuit tombée, les rues se remplissent de promeneurs locaux et étrangers. On trouve ici de tout : aussi bien des épices et des souvenirs du pays que de l'artisanat local. Une partie est même dédiée au souk des faucons et une autre aux écuries. Si vous cherchez quelque chose à rapporter chez vous, vous avez l'embarras du choix : tapis, couvertures, tissus, cafetières arabes, brûleurs d'encens... Côté bijoux, on trouve de l'or, de l'argent, des chapelets de perles... Pas de panique pour ceux qui n'ont pas de liquide, des distributeurs sont disponibles sur place.
Pour se rafraichir ou se restaurer, on croise de nombreuses adresses dont d'agréables bars à chichas. Nous avons eu l'occasion de dîner dans le restaurant égyptien Al Layali Al Qahira. La nourriture y est délicieuse mais allez-y le vendre vide, un vrai festin attend les gourmands.
